Carlisle

Carlisle has over 2000 years of history. Celts, Romans and invading armies have all left an intriguing legacy to be explored, such as Hadrian's Wall, a fascinating World Heritage Site and the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain.

Carlisle Castle, built in 1092 by William Rufus, is remarkably well preserved and offers tours of the grounds and chambers within, including the dungeons where the famous "licking stones" can be seen. Just a short walk away is Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery , a classical Grade One Listed Jacobean building, full of exciting exhibits and interactive displays.

Running through some of the most attractive scenery in the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbrian Fells, the Settle-Carlisle railway is world famous for its Victorian architecture, huge stone viaducts, long tunnels and remote wayside station buildings.

Located just a 10 minute walk from Carlisle city centre, the Sands Centre plays host to international orchestras, theatre, opera and ballet companies, international recording artists and comedians, both past and present.

Penrith and The Lakes

There are a wide range of activities and things to do in the Lake District, and with more than 3,100 kilometres of rights of way, you can walk and cycle around the countryside to your heart’s content.

Penrith and surrounding areas have their fair share of historic monuments which reflect the local history, from the 14th-Century castle ruin in the centre of the town to the Penrith Beacon, built in 1719, theres plenty to explore and discover.

Within the historic market town of Penrith there are plenty of ways to keep entertained during rainy weather with a variety of resturants, cafes, many being dog friendly, and other places of interest such as The Alhambra, an independent cinema, Penrith and Eden Museum and many small gifts shops.

The Lake District is one of the darkest places in the UK. So after the sun sets, head for a secluded valley or remote fell top and take in the starry skies above you.
